General Note
  • General note - Photo taken from the Xavier Seminary heights early in the morning. Mount Apo, the Philippine''s highest mountain, reaches 9,690 ft.; located 15 miles from the west shore of the Bay of Davao. It has two great peaks separated by a shore about 150 by 70 ft. wide. The southern peak has four smaller peaks. Mount Apo has been the object of several explorations; the first was made in 1859 headed by the first Spanish official to settle in Davao, Jose de Oyanguren. The first successful ascent, however, was made by Joaquin Rajal in 1880. Pagan Bagobos believe that Maran-dangan, the god of fire, lived here and they used to make human sacrifices to propitiate the anger of the god. "Apo" is a general title for reverence given to an elder or one who occupies a venerated position.
