General Note
  • General note - Lying in the midst of the channel between Panay and Guimaras islands are a cluster of thickly-wooded, small coral islands, seven of which closely set to each other, have been named "Islas de Siete Pecados" (Islands of the Seven sins). A popular Visayan folk tale relates how there once lived in the seaside village of Bantiling, at the eastern part of Iloilo, a couple who were very jealous of their seven lovely daughters and never allowed them to mix with the people. One day, while gathering firewood by the shore, an acquaintance invited the sisters to a fiesta in Negros across the Guimaras strait. Although they declined the invitation at first they decided to go without the knowledge of their parents. Once dark had fallen, they escaped from the house and with a boatman paddled their way to Negros unmindful of an approaching storm. At the fiesta they flirted with the swains and enjoyed dancing so much that they failed to notice the time. Late at night they returned home. Midway between Negros and Iloilo, their boat capsized for the sea was rough. The boatman who survived related that he found no trace of the sisters whom the townspeople believed were punished for their disobedience. Several days later, seven small islands appeared on the spot where the sisters drowned. It is said that for a long time, fishermen avoided the place, because wailing voices could be heard every seventh day of the month, according to old folk''s tale.
