General Note
  • General note - The backyard of the Catholic church has been converted into a temporary marketplace while a concrete building is being completed by the newly-seated municipal administration. Market days are Tuesday and Saturdays, but hardly can we see an overcrowded, busy market. What an observer will find here is trade and business in its mild state. Although not situated in a wealthy and prosperous region, the average Ilocos Norte inhabitant is not a trader. He is a producer, but he does not, generally speaking, produce for the trade. He produces for himself and the needs of his family. He is not business-minded. He practices home economy, selling little and buying less. This is not only the result of the rather limited agricultural land areas available within the province, but also the inherent trait of the average inhabitant to produce most of the family needs, from food to clothing and even to the house utensils, furnishing, ornaments and luxury goods. The PaoayeƱo trait to practice self-sufficiency is accompanied with the constant urge to buy his necessities at the cheapest possible price. The sturdy Ilocano finds it hard to part with his hard-earned money. As a result, we hear buyers and sellers bargaining for hours.
