General Note
  • General note - The archbishop''s palace in Jaro was built by the Mons. Jose Ma. Cuenco, its first tenant. The archdiocese of Jaro, elevated to such status on June 29, 1951, comprises the provinces of Iloilo and Antique, including the islands of Semirara, Caluya, Sibay, Siba-ton, Sibalon and Libago. It was formerly under the vast diocese of Cebu (since 1595) along with Palawan, Romblon, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar and Mindanao; erected as a separate diocese on June, 1865, by a papal bull which was carried into effect on October 10, 1867 by Mons. Gregorio Meliton Martinez, Archbishop of Manila. The new diocese comprised the island of Palawan, Romblon, Panay, Negros, Davao, Zamboanga and Basilan; while its titular since then is St. Elizabeth of Hungary. By the turn of 20th century, the diocese was split by a schism between Filipino seculars, led by Fr. Nicolas Valencia of Molo, and the Spanish Recollect Andres Ferrero whose appointment as bishop during the revolution in 1898 was opposed by the former. A hostile association and separate diocesan seminary apart from that of San Vicente Ferrer in Jaro were formed. Bishop Ferrero resigned on October 23, 1903, and sailed for Spain after failing to get the cooperation of the local clergy. In Ferrero's place was appointed a secular American bishop, Mons. Frederich Rooker, who succeeded in pacifying the rebellious priests.
