| General Note |
- General note - A typical scene in Estancia during the late afternoon is shown in photo. A fleet of basnigs -- 1 to 3 masted motor boats and from 2 to 20 tons -- leaves for the outer Visayan Sea to fish the whole night. The use of basnigs, from which nets are cast, is a popular fishing method among Visayan fishermen. Several incandescent lamps are used to attract fish which are taken then hauled by nets. The Visayan Sea is one of the country''s richest fishing grounds: the source of the fishing markets of Cadiz and Sagay (northern Negros Occidental) and Bantayan Island (northern Cebu), aside from the northwestern coastal towns of Panay namely: Carles, Estancia, San Dionisio and Concepcion. It leads in the production of anchovies, herring s and porgies and slipmouths; and second to Guimaras Straight in the production of croakers, flatfish and round scads. Shrimps and herrings are found throughout the year.
