- General note - A view from the Mindanao State University. Marawi City, capital of Lanao del Norte and formerly Dansalan, sits on a verdant rolling county-side 2,500 ft. above sea level. The city lies at the edge of beautiful Lake Lanao, a huge body of water fed by springs found high up among the surrounding bills and volcanic peaks. The lake encompasses the life and commerce in the more than 20 communities on its coasts. Marawi was reputed to be the strongest cotta in Lanao during the Spanish era. Beginning from the administration of Governor-General Weyler, 1888-1891, a series of campaigns was started to bring the Lanao region under government control. Despujol continued the campaigns but it was left for Gov. General Blanco to establish Spanish power in this region. The governor in 1894, with a force of 3,000 men under the immediate command of General Parrado, succeeded to taking Marawi. In 1895, pursuant to a gobernatorial decree dated at Marawi on October 8 of that year, Lanao was organized into a district with a politico-military government.
