| General Note |
- General note - Largest lake in Mindanao, the main means of contact between towns and villages comprising Lanao province. A line drawn across the lake in a southwesternly direction divides the province into two geographical areas: first, the exceedingly mountainous northwestern region that slopes from the ranges along the lake to the Panguil and Iligan Bays; and second, the southeastern portion, having an older topography, which gradually slopes from the highlands on the northern border of Cotabato to the lake. The rivers of the southwestern region, of which Malaig and Putian are the most important empty into Lake Lanao. Lake Lanao is believed to have been formed as a result of the subsidence of the land following the eruption of volcanoes in the vicinity. The smaller lakes in the same region are crater lakes. Fishing is an important industry both in the lake region and along the coasts. The people from the lake shore are called maranaw, meaning "dweller of the lake".
