General Note
  • General note - Photo of the newly-finished building that has an old-Spanish motif. Ormoc, belonging to the 4th congressional district has 6l barrios. Its population (March, 1970 census) is 84,426. Water resources are: Ormoc City Waterworks - Mahayag and Ahag Springs; Bay: Ormoc Bay; Spring: Tugonon Hot Spring (believed to be medicinal); Lakes: Lake Danao (between Jaro and Ormoc, oblong in shape, good for fishing, swimming, boating) and lake Lunay (near Valencia, Ormoc). The city''s area is over 64,000 hectares, mostly composed of fertile plains suitable for agriculture - these wide tracts of arable lands have lured many Cebuanos, Ilocanos and Tagalogs to settle there. Formerly, Ormoc City was the only place in the Philippines with two sugar centrals: the Ormoc Sugar Company and the Rosario Sugar Mills. With the closure of the latter, the Ormoc Sugar Company absorbed its interests, purchasing its quota rights. The Ormoc Sugar Company is the only central in the province of Leyte and in its banner year of 1940-41 milled a total of 207,099 piculs of sugar. It has started its milling operation in mid-February of 1949 and is hopeful of filling up most of its quota allocations. It is owned by Don Carlos Rivilla, a prominent sugar tycoon. Aside from the sugar industry, which incidentally is providing work to thousands of laborers, Ormoc City produces various staple crops in commercial quantities, so much so that is has been and still is, the rice and corn granary of Western Visayas. Copra is also on the upgrade and production of this particular commodity is higher than in prewar years; Procter and Gamble has opened a purchasing agency in this city. Taken at Ormoc City, 1973.
