| Notes |
- Notes - Oil on canvas. 36" x 36". In 1807, a revolt started in the Ilocos provinces, begun by certain Spanish deserters from Vigan and aided by the natives who resented the government monopoly of wine and the consequent prohibition in the manufacture of basi or sugarcane wine. The revolt spread quickly all over the Ilocos provinces but was put down by the full support of loyal Spanish soldiers and the clergy. The leaders were captured and hanged. This revolt has been known as the Basi Revolt. An unschooled painter from Vigan who signed himself "E. Villanueva" recorded in 14 frames, in 1821 , the bloody progress of this Ilocano uprising. The first frame shows loyal troops gathered by the alcalde-mayor on horseback, who enlists gobernadorcillo and their men. Loyal residents have come armed with spears to the town crier''s drum. Small cannon form their artillery. See also AC00785(b&w).
