General Note
  • General note - Photo of Park, c. 1890. Known as Bagumbayan or new town during the Spanish regime, Luneta was once a barrio of Tondo located about 300 paces away from the Walled City. It was famous for its recreation drive where Manila''s elite used to display wealth during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Besides being a frequent scene of military parades, religious processions - especially during the Lenten season - and civic functions, it was also a site of several attacks against the Walled City and an execution field for criminals and enemies of the colonial government. Games and sports were often held here during the American regime as well as annual carnivals featuring booths which exhibited local products and handicrafts. Sunday concerts were likewise given here by the famous Constabulary band. Among the religious affairs held in the place before the second world war were the First National Eucharistic Congress in 1930, the International Eucharistic Congress in 1937, and the coronation of the Virgin of Antipolo, Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyages. Shortly after the war, on July 4, 1946, the Philippine Republic was inaugurated at the Luneta grandstand - several decades after Fathers Gomez, Burgos and Zamora were executed in 1872, and Dr. Jose Rizal, in 1896. Recently this historic place was converted into a national park. This project was initiated by Mrs. Evangelina Macapagal and continued by the succeeding First Lady, Mrs. Imelda Marcos. The improvement of the Rizal Park, as it is presently called, was finally completed on December 31, 1967.
