General Note
  • General note - Photo of university plaza in Intramuros. The University of Santo Tomas of the Dominican order, the oldest university in the Philippines, was founded in l6ll. Its recognized founder, Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, second Archbishop of Manila who died in 1605, bequeathed his library and properties valued at P1,500 for the purpose of establishing this institution of higher learning. With this and other donations coining from Pablo Rodriguez de Araujo, Andres Hermosa and Juan Morales, the Colegio Seminario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, as it was initially called, was founded after royal permission was granted by King Philip III. Eight years later it was officially recognized by the Spanish government. In 1624 King Philip IV authorized the College to confer academic degrees for a probationary period of 10 years, extended for another 10 years by Pope Urban VIII in 1627. In 1645 Pope Innocent X elevated it to the rank of University, with the right to confer academic degrees in Arts, Philosophy and Theology. It adopted the Statutes of the University of Mexico, in turn patterned after those of the University of Salamanca. King Carlos II placed the University under royal patronage in 1680 but it was his successor, Carlos III, who granted it the title "Real Universidad de Santo Tomas" many years later, in 1785. In 1902 Pope Leo XIII bestowed upon it the title "Pontifical University" and in 1947, Pope Pius XII named it "The Catholic University of the Philippines." It opened its doors to women in 1923. Formerly located in Intramuros, just opposite the Santo Domingo church from the day it was founded to 1945, it was transferred to España Street, Manila, after the war where it occupies one huge block. It has 16 faculties at present (1969) excluding the high school department.
