| General Note |
- General note - On the spot where this old balete tree stands was the provincial jail of Negros when Himamaylan was yet the capital in 1734. Here Gov. Juan Nepomuceno de Cordova was assassinated by rioting prisoners. While visiting the jail one afternoon he struck with a cane a prisoner who pulled a knife and stabbed Cordova in the heart. Earlier, the prisoners complained of being fed with the meat of sick or dead carabaos. Two guards came to Cordova''s rescue but were cut down by other prisoners. Soldiers then opened fire and scores of prisoners were killed. There is today in Himamaylan a place called Tumpok (meaning a mound) where the prisoners were buried.
