| General Note |
- General note - Another photo of the tower-fortress which used to be guarded by 3 Spanish, cast-iron cannons. The selection of Gumaca''s present location was determined by an orange fruit (the native lukban or pomelo?), marked with a cross, which the natives set adrift into the sea near Gusuan, and later recovered at the present townsite. Tradition claims that the town''s name was given after an ancient chieftain, Lakan Bugtali, fought ("bumaka") and won over a sea pirate named Lam-ong. Another version is that the name was taken from "Gumawa kal", words of admonition given by Spanish friars to the natives. The latter version is rejected by the residents because of its unflattering connotation.
