| General Note |
- General note - Frequent Muslim incursions reaching heights in 1770-75 compelled the natives of Ibabai (ancient name for the north and eastern coasts of Samar island) to build forts for protection or at least watchtowers for the detection of coming Muslim raiders. Catubig, one of the oft-raided towns of the island, built a small watchtower in Buring to warn the townspeople of coming attacks. Buring is an islet at the mouth of the Catubig River, some 19 kilometers away from the Catubig poblacion. It is nearer to and surrounded by barrios belonging to Laoang and Palapag but because of its importance to Catubig, this islet has been included in the town''s territory. Photo shows ruins of the tower, now obscured by thick bushes and undergrowths. It was built some time in the early 18th century.
