| General Note |
- General note - Lauang, a visita founded by three prominent Palapagnons, namely, Cajundic, Surahan and Anodanod, in 1680, was separated from Palapag in 1768. Fray Antonio de Toledo was appointed its parish priest and administrator in the same year. Lying at 12° 3'' 40" latitude, Lauang is an irregular expanse located at the southwestern shore of a small island of the same name. Lauang is bounded by Palapag at the southeast, by Pambujan at the south. To the north of the island is Cahayugan and to the northeast is Batag. In 1865, Fray Felix de Huerta accounted for a solidly founded church, an adjoining convent, a semi-concrete "casa tribunal" and a schoolhouse. To the town belonged the visitas named Colomotan and Matomboton, both found in the island itself. Burabod, another visita, was in the mainland of Samar. A widely-spread tradition says that the settlement was once in Samar itself, at the heart of the wide expanse of rice fields that is still found in the same place to date. But because of the constant threat of Muslim sea pirate attacks, the inhabitants were driven to the coastal end of Lauang Island where the steeply rising terrain offered natural sanctuary. The natives of the neighboring village of Palapag led by Sumoroy retreated to its mountains after having killed a Jesuit priest and for years, challenged the military power of the Spaniards until the leader was treacherously vanquished.
