| General Note |
- General note - Separating Samar from Luzon is the treacherous San Bernardino Strait, known in Spanish times as the Embocadero (entrance) or Paso de Acapulco, where the galleons passed before finally leaving the archipelago into the Pacific Ocean. Passage of the Embocadero was tedious and hazardous; it was specially feared because of its shifting tides and treacherous currents, not to mention the shoals, rocks, and low-lying islands which menaced safe travel. Islands seen in the background are the Calintaans, and farther is Matnog, Sorsogon.
