General Note
  • General note - On September 28, 1901, 76 American soldiers landed in Balang-iga, a town at the southern coast of Samar and occupied the area about the town plaza. At first the Americans were looked upon with good favor by the local populace but their attitude soon changed when the American soldiers started committing big blunders. They levied unfair taxes, made advances to the women, imprisoned several men and subjected them to forced labor. Strongly agitated by these abuses, the leaders of the town hatched a plan to wipe out the Americans. The natives who could only be armed with "sundangs" and bolos were to attack the soldiers at breakfast, the time when they were without arms. The women and the children would have to he sent out of the town. Since the soldiers were used to seeing the women trooping to the church in the morning, the men would disguise themselves in female clothes and with their weapons under their skirts, would go to the church and wait for the signal-tolling of the bell. The attack went on as planned except for a certain hitch. One American was able to grab a gun and started shooting at the attacking crowd. Sixteen Balang-iga men died of bullet wounds. Two American soldiers who survived the assault took a banca to Leyte and reported the incident. The following day, the Americans from Tacloban landed in Balangiga, buried their dead, scorched the town to the ground and fired some shots at the mountain where the Balangiga attackers sought refuge.
