| General Note |
- General note - The Sohotan Cave is a large L-shaped endogen cave situated in a miocene-pliocene limestone formation in Southwestern Samar, approximately 30 kilometers up the end of the Sohotan cliffs while the east-west leg opens out under the arch of a natural bridge. Surface collection and intent observation within the cave indicated that it was not used as a burial ground. The well-ventilated and dry expanse led archaeologists to theorize that it was a habitation site. As there is a dearth of faunal materials and cultural implements, it is also supposed that the cave had been a temporary shelter of the early inhabitants (pintados). Fedor Jagor made the first report on the archaeological contents of the cave in 1860. (In 1830, an overly zealous priest undertook an expedition to the neighboring caves, broke the coffins into pieces and threw the skeletal remains into the sea.)
