Essential requirements are a large rectangular prayer hall and an anteroom with a water fountain for ablution. In photo is a small conservative mosque in Parang, Jolo. Semi-circular center is the prayer niche or mihrab. At the rooftop are the crescent and star, symbols of the Islamic faith. Painted, carved wooden panels under the eaves are called jala-jala, popular decorative feature of Suluan architecture.
