- General note - Entrance to the U.S. military barracks at Zamboanga showing Generals Miles and Summer on inspection tour. The barracks was named in honor of Colonel James S. Pettit, commanding officer of the Second Military District and later Inspector General and officer-in-charge of Civil Affairs, Zamboanga, at the turn of the century. This site was occupied by the U.S. forces after the capture of Zamboanga City from the Spaniards on November l6,l899; by the Japanese forces in 1942-45; recaptured by the Americans on March 10, 1945; and finally turned over to the Philippine government on July 4, 1946.
