General Note
  • General note - A visita of the town of Capul until 1785 and under the administration of the parish priest of Bangahon until 1788, Calbayog used to be known as Tiaybon. Jesuit historians wrote that the village was founded in a plain 2k miles from a river (Tiaybon). The settlement transferred to a location by the bank of Jibatan River, took on the same name but there suffered from a big flood in 1692. It was then moved to its present place and was renamed Calbayog. The town lies at 12° 4' 25" latitude on a plain that forms a part of the Samar western coast. Confined at the north by Bobon, Catarman and Mondragon, at the east by Bangahon, and Sta. Margarita at the Southeast by Dapdap and at the south by the sea. Calbayog is watered by the tributaries of Pambujan, Bangahon and Oquendo. The first church of the town, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary was of nipa. In an account made by the Fray Felix de Huerta in 1865, Calbayog covered Carayman, Magsojon, Limancauayan, Jibatan, Jimonini, Magubay, and Jinagdanan. Calbayog's mountainous section at the north yields excellent timbers, palm, rattan, and wildlife. At the junction of Jibatan and Jimonini rivers is a natural hot spring, flanked by several coal mines. The coastal waters abound in a great range of fishes amber, and mother of pearl.
