| General Note |
- General note - Tandag, the old capital of the district of Caraga (which included the provinces of Surigao, Agusan and part of Davao), was a riverine village and an important center of domestic trade. Made the capital of Surigao del Sur upon the creation of the province in 1960, it has continued to be one of the more important ports of northeastern Mindanao. Photo shows the center of the town in the background at the mouth of the river (also named Tandag), used as a common log pond by several forest concessionaires. Somewhere along this river the Spaniard's built a fort immediately after hostile natives were subdued in 1609. The encomendero Juan de Silva took command of the redoubt, making Tandag the capital of the district of Caraga for many years until the end of the 19th century.
