General Note
  • General note - At the time this village was still a barrio of Baliwag, Fray Tomas Gresa, the Augustinian parish priest, would always set aside one Sunday to baptize the babies of the place. The people of the barrio would take their babies on a "panseta", an improvised ferry ride of two or three boats tied together and pulled by two men on each bank of the river. One morning in 1862, the heavy rains and the strong water current overturned the "panseta" killing all the babies and several adults aboard. Hearing about the misfortune of his parishioners, Fray Gresa was quick to extol the courage and piety of the people and likened them to Bustos, the gallant Spanish soldier who distinguished himself in the defense of Manila against the British in 1762. To imortalize the memory of the babies who perished in the incident, Fray Gabriel Alvarez erected a stone church in 1867 and dedicated it to the Holy Child Jesus. Bustos is a 8423 hectare-expanse of ricelands, orchards and small sitios. It is bounded on the northeast by San Rafael, on the west by Baliwag, on the southeast by Plaridel, on the south by Pandi and on the east by Arayat. The village was declared an independent town in 1867 but was merged with Baliwag immediately after the start of the American rule. Bustos was again separated from Baliwag and made a municipality on January 1, 1917.
