- Original Caption - Shrine on the north wall of Fort Pilar, Zamboanga. The native Catholic population of Zamboanga annually celebrate at this shrine the day of "Nuestra Señora del Pilar," who is supposed to have miraculously appeared at this place. The legend believed by the natives recites how a Spanish soldier on night guard without the walls of this fort challenged a figure which appeared before him, and on being unheeded fired upon it without appreciable effect. The soldier was found dead the following morning without wound or disfiguration, and "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" took her station on the wall where her image is regarded with superstitous veneration.
