| General Note |
- General note - The province of Surigao occupies the northeastern half of Mindanao''s eastern coastal plain and mountain slopes. From the time the Spaniards took control of the province in the late 16th century up to 1849, it included that part of southeastern Mindanao which presently belongs to Davao. In 1860 it became the third military district of Mindanao and was divided into two provinces in 1960. Photo shows the capitol building which was built in the 1920''s and enlarged shortly after World War II. Perched on a hilltop, the capitol site offers a commanding view of Surigao City, its capital.
