Title Statement
  • Title - Surigao Strait
General Note
  • General note - One of the two straits (the other being San Bernardino, between Sorsogon and Samar) used as a passageway by ocean going vessels from the Pacific entering the inland waters of the Philippine archipelago; also used in going to the Sulu Sea by steamers from Australia that wish to escape the full force of the northeast monsoon. In 1521, during Magellan''s voyage across the Pacific that led to his "discovery" of the Philippines, he crossed this strait before reaching Limasawa island. Photo was taken from the shore of barrio Ipil, a fishing village in Surigao City, overlooking the islands of Leyte and Limasawa (not seen in the photo).
