- Title - Bilang-Bilang Harbor
|
| General Note |
- General note - On the northeastern tip of mainland Surigao is found the province''s leading harbor and busiest port at Bilang-Bilang. Being "the first sight of land" for all shipping headed for the southern part of the country along the eastern coast, Surigao plays an important role in the commerce and trade between Mindanao on one hand, and Luzon and Visayas on the other. It is likewise a point of entry in the Philippines for all ships coming from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. This harbor is also historically significant, for U.S. Admiral William Halsey''s bomber planes here sunk some 50 Japanese warships on September 9, 1944, thus paving the way for the province''s liberation several months later, on April 12, 1945.
