| General Note |
- General note - Located at the mouth of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, locally known as the Polangui River, this city is both the capital and the port of this province. The Spaniards called the place Cotabato from two Maguindanao wards "Cotta Bato," meaning "stone fort." The original name for the place was Maguindanao, which means "the place that has been inundated." In time the town came to be known as Cotabato, while the word Mindanao was applied to the whole island. Cotabato town, which was founded around 1862, was the capital of Mindanao island for three years. The Cotabato valley is one of the most fertile regions in the Phils. Until 1913, when the gov''t. began establishing colonies of Christian Filipinos, it was inhabited only by the Muslims.
