- General note - The southern branch of this river empties into the sea below Tamontaca. From Tumbao to Tamontaca is the most beautiful and fertile part of the Rio Grande. On both banks grow coconuts, areca palms, bananas, cacao trees, coffee bushes, and hemp in abundance. Interspersed are groups of native houses forming a continuous village, and the placid river, here fifty yards wide, forms the main street.
