General Note
  • General note - Off the northeastern coast of Panay are numerous islands and islets (nearly 60) most of which are less than a square mile in area. One of the largest among the group is shown in photo, the Pan de Azucar (sugar loaf), which has an area of 7.5 square miles. The island has five peaks, the highest of which measures 1,881 feet high. In this vicinity, Juan Salgado fought a battle against the Muslim pirates in 1604. The towns along the northwestern coast of Iloilo, notably Dumangas, Ajuy and Banate were frequently raided by the Muslims during the early 17th century.
