- General note - To the southwest of Bohol, fronting the capital of Tagbilaran, squats the island of Panglao with a long stretch of land rolling down from its only elevation, the Calumpang mountain. It has an area of 31.1 sq. miles. Here the Spaniards rested after Magellan''s death in Mactan, Cebu on April 27, 1921; they were under the command of Lopez de Carvalho and Sebastian Elcano who decided to burn the Concepcion, one of their ships, for lack of men and supplies. In 1803, some Spanish explorers gave the island its present name. "Panglao" was derived from the native word for lonely or "ma-panglao." Presently composed of two municipalities, Dauis and Panglao, it is separated from the rest of Bohol by a narrow but shallow water passageway which is often dry during summer.
