| General Note |
- General note - Commonly referred to as the "New Volcano" by the people of Camiguin, Hibok-Hibok - the main cone in Mount Catarman - is actually older than the other volcanic cone in the range called Volcan Da-an which erupted in 1871. Dormant for several centuries, previous eruptions were never recorded. It started to show signs of reawakening in 1897 till 1902, during which time solfataric (the silent emission of sulfurous gases) activities were observed. Succeeding eruptions occurred on September 1, 1948, and September 15, 1950. On December 4, 1951, without any warning tremor, it erupted anew, killing about 500 lives. The eruption was accompanied by terrifying flashes of lightning and thunder, driving the people to panic. A feeble explosion was recorded on December 14, 1952.
