General Note
  • General note - Panoramic view of the Cagayan de Oro City, capital of Misamis Oriental, facing Macajalar Bay. Legendary tales say that it was formerly called Kalambagohan, a pre-Spanish settlement like Himologan, established by the Bukidnons at the bank of the river which abounds with lambago trees; hence, its name. Towards the end of the 16th century, some Muslim Maguindanaos from Cotabato invaded it and their leader, Raja Muda Samporna(the Unopposed), demanded the surrender of the local datu who fled into the interior with his followers. To obtain favorable terms for his surrender, the local datu sent his beautiful daughter to the victor, and as a result Samporna built a cotta around the village for his bride. The Maguindanaos presented their leader''s action and henceforth held the place in contempt. They named it "a place of shame or Kaayahan in their dialect. The Bukidnons, on their part, humiliated by their defeat, gave the place a similar name, Kagayha-an. In 1624, when Himologan was abandoned as a stronghold against Muslim attacks, the residents moved to Cagayan at the suggestion of Fray Agustin de San Pedro. The area was surrounded by a high rampart from which defenders could shoot down the enemy, and a lookout tower was built, commanding an excellent view of the river and the plain below. Cagayan withstood 270 years of Muslim attacks, notably those led by Sultan Kudrat (Corralat). De Oro was added to the town''s name when it became a chartered city in 1950. Gold deposits were discovered in Mungi and Pigtaw and in the sandbed of Carmen river.
