| General Note |
- General note - Sugar made Bacolod the prosperous city that it is now. It started as an early settlement in the 1770''s with Bernardino de los Santos as gobernadorcillo (mayor). The hilly terrain, which the natives called in the Ilonggo dialect as "buklod" of "bakolod", was picked by the Spanish conquistadores as its name. In 1849 the capital of Negros was transferred to Bacolod from the old seat of government in Himamaylan, on orders of Governor General Narciso Claveria. The development of agriculture began with the planting of sugar-cane, and the progress of neighboring towns like Silay and Talisay, accounted for the transfer. Another cause was the Muslim raids of 1787, when the settlers regrouped and established their residence on the shores of Bacolod.
