Title Statement
  • Title - Quezon Province Capitol
General Note
  • General note - Created in 1591, Quezon province was originally named Kalilayan, after its first capital (now the town of Unisan). Because of frequent Muslim incursions, the capital was transferred to an inland town called Tayabas in 1750, and the province came to be known by that name until 1946. On September 7, 1946, Republic Act No. 14 gave the province its third and present name, in honor of Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon, who hailed from Baler, one of its coastal towns in the north. Photo shows the provincial capitol Building erected in 1933 and reconstructed in 1945 after liberation. On the foreground is a sculpture of rocks piled one on top of the other, each representing a town. Bust of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, in bas relief is centerpiece.
