- Title - Binondo drugstore
|
| Notes |
- Notes - The drugstore was located on the ground floor of a "bahay na bato" in the commercial district of Binondo. The bahay na bato is a strongly built and permanent house made of stone and wood developed during the Spanish period. Shown is a classic "bahay na bato" the two-storey house built after the 1677 earthquake and continued to be built up to the 19th century. The ground floor is enclosed by stone walls which are not load-bearing but more like curtains. The second storey of wood rests on the haligi or wooden pillars which were dug into earth 2.5 meter to 3 meters deep and enclosed with masonry. One side of the house has as many as sixteen capiz main windows and four ventanillas or little windows just below them. The tiled roof and its heavy timberwork are supported by wooden pillars. In commercial districts like Binondo, the gorund floor was rented out as hop or store spaces.
