- General note - Probably the first machine gun used by U.S. forces was the Gatling invented by Richard J. Gatling of North Carolina. Used after the civil war, this arm was extensively and effectively fired during the war with Spain, the Philippines and Mexico. Gun was sighted through round ammo clip at center.
