- Notes - Photo shows houses that feature a volada, which was basically a gallery that could be shuttered to shade the rooms of the house from the tropical sun. (Source: Philippine Ancestral Houses, Fernando Zialcita and Martin Tinio, 1980). Photo shows houses that feature a volada which opens out fully into the room it used to enclose. Volada was a 19th century solution to shade the rooms from the tropical sun. it was a second stone wall built around the house proper at a distance of about a meter and a half and connected to the house proper by a passage way. The effect was that of corredor or galeria. The volada was rendered superfluous by the construction of awnings and wider roof eaves.
