- Notes - A close-up of one side of a nipa hut. The upper bamboo pole is called the kahab-an, which connects the bottom ends of the rafters while being supported by an upright vertical pole. Another horizontal pole, pegged to the latter, serves to hold up the window shutter made of flattened sawali or split and woven bamboo, which can be pushed up with a pole or to the side to allow light and air to come in.
