Title Statement
  • Title - Trochus shell
General Note
  • General note - The trochus shell and the mother of pearl, both from southern Philippines, were once sources of a popular Philippine export--pearl buttons. Gathered from the sea and known for their luster, these shells were cut into the desired shape and size, polished, and drilled. In 1920 there were only two button factories in the philippines, their combined output being pnly 50,000 gross a month. Most of the buttons were shipped to the United States. The commercial value of these shells dropped to almost zero with the rise of the plastic industry after World War ll.
