- General note - Trade with the Chinese had been going on in the islands for over 600 years when the Spaniards came in the late 16th century. The trade was never active. Except for Sulu pearls, the Chinese found little of commercial value in the Philippines. The sultan had the sovereign right to sell all pearls that exceeded the size fixed by Sulu law.
