| Notes |
- Notes - Shown is the main entrance to the Manila Observatory along Calle del Observatorio (now Padre Faura Street). It was established by the Jesuits in 1865 and became the country''s official weather bureau in 1901. It housed the famous 18-inch refracting telescope ordered from Mertz factory in Germany and about 254 scientific papers by Father Manuel Selga. Unfortunately, these were all destroyed in the battle of Manila in 1945. A new observatory now stands within the Ateneo de Manila campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. In that year, two scholastics of the Escuela Municipal, Fray Francisco Colina and Fray jaime nonell, published in a local daily their observations of a typhoon that had just swept the suburbs. The business sector saw the advantage of being able to forecast typhoons and in time, had contributed enough money to replace Fray Colina''s primitive meteorological instruments.
