General Note
  • General note - Another photo of the marker with a part of the Inabangan mountains seen in the background. Isolated and difficult to reach, the area made an ideal seat for the free government established by Dagohoy in 1744. For a period of 85 years, Dagohoy and his followers paid no tribute and did not render forced services. Most of the local customs and practices in religion and government prior to the coming of the Spaniards were revived; weddings and baptisms were solemnized by persons who acted as ministers of the church. Twenty Spaniards governors-general, from Gaspar de la Torre (1739-45) to Juan Antonio Martinez (1822-25), failed to suppress the uprising. More successful was Governor Mariano Ricafort who sent two military expeditions: first in 1827, led by the alcalde mayor of Cebu, Jose Lozano Cairo, who failed in spite of a promise of exemption from the payment of tribute for 10 years; and another, led by Capt. Manuel Sanz, which resulted in the defeat of the exhausted rebel forces and the surrender of some 19,420 survivors who were subsequently pardoned by Ricafort. The rebellion was finally put to an end on August 31, 1829. Dagohoy had died of sickness, or probably old age, 4 years earlier (1825); he was then 101. His brothers Auag and Handug led the rebels after his death.
