- General note - On the other side of the marker honoring Lauplapu is another marker commemorating Ferdinand Magellan's death on April 27, 1521. The remaining Spaniards returned to Spain aboard "Victoria" under the command of Juan Sebastian del Cano. When they reached San Lucar de Barrameda, on September 6, 1522, the first circumnavigation of the earth was completed.1
