- Notes - Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, at first built a small fort surrounded by wooden stakes, which soon tumbled down. Governor Francisco de Sande (1575-1580) rebuilt it but only in 1738 was the present fort erected. It is built of stone and mortar and is situated on a point on the shore of the sea, in 10 degrees of north latitude, and 161 degrees 47'' of east longtitude. The shape of this fort is triangular, with three bastions having straight flanks; it is 1,248 feet in circuit. During the Spanish regime, the walls at the gate were of unequal height. The one which faces the city, toward the northwest is thegate. This was masked by an outer work of stakes square in shape; a palisade extended the whole length of the front walls in the form of a fausse-braye. This fort contained the necessary buildings within it; it had also arms and supplies, including 13 peices of bronze artillery and 18 iron cannons. The military force was headed by a captain of the Spanish infantry, who was the military governor. The maintenance of this post amounted to 1,584 pesos and 624 cavans of rice every year; this sum came from the proceeds of the tributes and other revenues which were collected in the province of Cebu. Shown is the main entrance to the fort.
