General Note
  • General note - The Bonifacio Monument at the intersection of Rizal Ave. Ext. and Samson Road, Caloocan. Erected in the 1930's to the spirit of Philippine insurrection against the Spanish, it was unharmed during the Second World War. In 1931, Tolentino won the first prize in the competition for the design of a new Bonifacio Monument. He was also awarded the contract for the erection of this new monument located about a kilometer west of the old monument designed by Ramon Martinez. Dominant part of the monument is the tapering, quadrangular shaft which measures about 45 ft. from base to tip. Anchored to the crown of the shaft is the winged figure of Victory. The focal point of interest, however, is the multi-figure composition on the step base around the shaft. Composing the group are figures depicting the scene of injustices, sufferings and reaction of the people. Which crucially led to the "First Cry" of the revolution. Andres Bonifacio heads the motley group. He faces south holding a bolo in the right hand and a revolver in the left. Behind him rises the Katipunan flag. The monument as a whole is filled with drama. With his copping the first place in the Bonifacio competition, the aura of fame has shown brighter around Tolentino for decades. Since then he has been known as the country's leading sculpture.
