- Notes - Photo shows the Spanish fort in Zamboanga at the turn of the century. It is protected on four sides by curtain of palisades, wall of stone and mortar and a canal, ten or twelve feet wide. Fort Pilar was abandoned by the Spaniards in 1661 to consolidate Manila's defenses against the Chienese. It was re-occupied in 1719, renamed "NUestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza" and maintained out of tributes paid by various provinces and revenues earned by the government from the monopoly on the sale of wine. c 1904.
