Notes
  • Notes - Photo shows the old fort which the Spaniards led by Frays Gregorio Belin and Melchor de Vera and aided by a labor force consisting mostly of Ilongos, started to construct in 1635. The fort was abandoned in 1661 when the Spanish authorities, then fearing attacks from Chinese freebooters, ordered the troops in Zamboanga and in the Moluccas to abandon their positions and reinforce Manila. For fifty eight years, Fort Pilar was deserted and in a state of decay. Reconstruction started almost as soon as the Spaniards returned in 1719. 1904. See AR00248
