- Title - Himologan Fortress
|
| Notes |
- Notes - An artist's concept of the Himologan fortress in Misamis Oriental. Perched on top of a rocky hill which jutted into the Cagayan River, it was said to be the first fortified settlement in Misamis. To reach the settlement, one had to climb rattan ladders let down from the summit.
Inside the wooden fortification wre living quarters connected by passages, housing around 500 inhabitants headed by by Salangsang or Salampang. At the center of the settlement was a small diwatahan(temple) which enshrined a little idol.
In about 1624, it was abandoned as a stronghold against attacks from Neighboring Muslim Maguindanaos and Maranaws. the lack of water supply made it vlnerable to the enemy , since he latter could simply surround the hill and starve the occupants. Besides, the settlement proved to be too small for the population.
Himologan was sometimes called huluga, derived from the Visayan word "hulog' which means "to throw down". The early inhabitants were said to throw timber felled in the forest above to the river below.
