- Notes - Scientific name: Sarcops calvus calvus, Sarcops calvus melanonotus, Sarcops calvus lowii Family: Sturnidae Local names: Kuling (Pil); Koleto (Tag); Saling, Iling, koling (Vis) Other common names: Bald Starling Underparts, wings and tail, bill and feet black. A large bare wattle around each eye covering most of the head (wattle pinkish flesh-colored). Upper back, rump, and mantle black or silvery gray depending on the subspecies. Found throughout the Philippines and Sulu Islands, the black-backed color phase being most common on the eastern islands. Common, often in flocks, feeds on fruits. Nests, as do other starlings, in a hollow tree, usually in old woodpecker nests. The call note "is a peculiar click, metallic but not displeasing." Often kept as a cagebird because of its reputed ability to learn to speak.
